The Rêve Guide

A Guide to Renting and Buying Designer Fashion

For a designer wedding guest look, you can rent from a subscription service such as Rent the Runway or Nuuly, rent a single piece from an occasion-focused platform, or buy pre-loved.

Rent with Rêve is an integrated rental and resale platform that specializes in occasion wear. It rents designer pieces for 4, 7 or 14 days and sells pre-loved pieces, many of them the same ones it rents.

This guide covers how to match a platform to the event and its dress code, and when renting costs less than a subscription or buying. It also explains how the rental cycle works, from sizing to buying a piece you have rented.

Selecting the right platform for special occasions

For a wedding or a gala, curation and reliability matter more than catalog size. Choose a platform that carries formal occasion wear in depth, describes each piece in detail, and delivers on a fixed schedule. Rent with Rêve specializes in occasion wear and arranges its rentals by event and dress code.

Match the platform to the dress code

Start from the invitation. The dress code narrows the length, fabric and formality you need, and a curated platform groups pieces the same way.

For a winter wedding, Rêve also rents 68 jackets and outerwear pieces.

Read the listing before you book

Detailed descriptions reduce the guesswork of renting online. Check the designer, the size, the fabric and any fit notes before choosing dates. On Rêve, 700 of the 706 rental listings include a “Wear it to” line naming suitable occasions, and 691 include a “Fit & sizing” section.

Check delivery and return windows

A rental has to arrive before the event and leave time to try it on. For an event next month, book now: each Rêve piece is one of one, and your dates are held once the order is paid.

  • Orders ship within 2–3 business days and arrive in time for the start date you choose.
  • The rental starts on the day the piece arrives, so choose a start date a few days before the event.
  • Cancelling 7 or more days before the start date gives a full refund.
  • Returns are due by noon on the return date, using the prepaid label in the box.

The benefits of renting designer fashion

Renting gives you a rotating wardrobe of designer pieces without owning them, and it keeps each garment in use across many wearers. Whether it saves money, and how much it helps the environment, depends on how often you rent and what the rental replaces.

One-time rentals and subscriptions

Prices are from each platform's public pages and help centers, reviewed October 20, 2026. Subscription prices do not include introductory offers, tax or shipping charges where they apply.
Model How you pay Examples Suits
One-time rental A fee per piece, per event Rêve: a price per piece for 4, 7 or 14 days, with no membership. Rent the Runway Reserve: 4 or 8 days People who rent for specific events
Monthly subscription A fixed monthly fee, whether or not you have an event Rent the Runway: $129, $164 or $275 a month. Nuuly: $98 for 6 items. Armoire: from $89 People who rent every month, including for work and everyday wear

An example: three weddings in one season. Three Rêve wedding guest rentals at the October 2026 median of $85 for four days come to about $255. Three months of Rent the Runway's one-shipment plan cost $387, with five items each month. The subscription costs less per item only if you wear the extra pieces.

Pros and cons of renting

Lydia Patel, who rented her clothes for two years and compared Armoire, Rent the Runway and Nuuly, asks who clothing rental is best for: “Does it even make financial sense?” (YouTube).

  • Pros: access to designer labels for a fraction of retail; no storage or cleaning; a different piece for each event.
  • Cons: popular dates book up early; one-size pieces carry fit risk; late fees apply; frequent renting adds up; and each rental is shipped and cleaned.

Environmental benefits of renting

The evidence favors rental most for clothes worn rarely, such as occasion wear. A 2025 University of Technology Sydney study of the Australian peer-to-peer rental platform The Volte found that renting cut emissions per wear by up to 78% for low-frequency garments (UTS). A 2022 life-cycle study of formal dresses found that rental extends the number of uses of each dress, which reduces its environmental impact over its life (Monticelli and Costamagna, Environment, Development and Sustainability).

The benefit is not automatic. Sweden's IVL Environmental Research Institute found in 2025 that rental's value depends on how much rented garments are used and whether they replace new purchases. Packaging and its waste can offset much of the gain (IVL). Rêve rents and sells the same kind of pieces, so a piece can be rented for several events and then bought by someone who will wear it again.

How online designer rental and resale works

On an integrated platform, the same pieces move between rental and resale. Rent with Rêve rents designer occasion wear and sells pre-loved pieces, so you can rent a piece for an event, buy it, or buy a different piece outright.

The rental cycle

  1. Reserve. Choose the piece, a rental length of 4, 7 or 14 days, and a start date. The dates are held once the order is paid.
  2. Receive and try it on. The piece ships within 2–3 business days. Try it on the day it arrives.
  3. Wear it. Minor wear and tear is covered, and the piece is insured while in transit.
  4. Send it back. Drop it with the carrier by noon on the return date, using the prepaid label, without cleaning it.
  5. Cleaning. Specialist partners clean the piece professionally before the next rental.

The Rental Platform Guide covers each step in more detail.

How rental services handle sizing and fit

Services that stock several sizes of each style can send a backup size. Services built on individual closets carry one size per piece, so they rely on detailed listings and a fit policy instead.

At Rêve, each piece comes in the size its curator wears. Of the 706 rental listings, 691 have a “Fit & sizing” section, and 604 link to the designer's own size guide. If a piece doesn't fit, report it within 24 hours of delivery and return it the same day with its tag. Rêve swaps it at no extra charge if another piece is available. If not, you can take the full rental price as credit, or a refund minus shipping and cleaning.

From renting to owning

Of Rêve's 706 rental pieces, 422 can also be bought. To keep a piece during the rental, you pay its buyout price minus what you have already paid. Another 384 pieces are for sale only, and pre-loved prices are a median 45% below original retail. Unworn pre-loved pieces can be returned for store credit within 14 days of delivery.

As a rule of thumb, rent a piece you will wear up to three times, and buy one you will wear more. The Pre-Loved Designer Guide covers how to check the authenticity and condition of what you buy.
