A Guide to Renting Designer Occasion Wear
Designer occasion wear rental lets you wear a gown, cocktail dress or evening piece from a designer label for one event, at a fraction of its retail price. You reserve the piece for your dates, wear it, and send it back. The platform cleans it before the next renter.
Online rental platforms for occasion wear follow two models. Subscription services, such as Rent the Runway and Nuuly, charge a monthly fee for a set number of items. Single-occasion services charge per piece, with no membership. Rent with Rêve is a curated designer rental and resale platform built around occasions: it rents pieces from curator closets for 4, 7 or 14 days, and it sells pre-loved pieces.

Benefits of renting designer occasion wear
Renting gives you a designer piece for the length of one event, at a fraction of the cost of buying it. Rent with Rêve offers a curated selection of designer gowns, dresses and evening pieces for weddings, galas and other formal events, arranged by occasion.
Designer labels for a fraction of retail
Occasion wear is often worn once. Renting replaces the retail price with a fee for the days you need the piece. On Rent with Rêve in October 2026, wedding guest pieces rented for a median of $85 for four days, and half fell between $65 and $115. That is a median of about 18% of the original retail price.
Gowns for weddings and black tie rented for a median of about $115 for four days, against a median original retail price of about $500. Each piece has its own price, shown on its page, and there is no membership fee.
A different piece for every occasion
A rental wardrobe changes with your calendar. In a season with several weddings, a rehearsal dinner and a holiday party, you can wear a different designer piece to each without adding any of them to your closet. One creator who rented her clothes for two years described the basic case: “You can rent an outfit to attend a wedding” (Lydia Patel).
Rêve's edits group pieces by occasion and dress code, such as The Wedding Guest Edit, The Black Tie Edit and The Charleston Edit. You start from the event, not from a search bar.
Booking and delivery for a weekend event
Each Rêve piece is one of one, so booking early gives you the widest choice. Your dates are held as soon as the order is paid.
- Start date: choose one a few days before the event. The rental period begins on the day the piece arrives, not the day it ships.
- Shipping: orders ship within 2–3 business days, with tracking by email, and arrive in time for the start date.
- Example: for a Saturday wedding, a four-day rental that starts on Thursday covers Thursday to Sunday and leaves time to try the piece on.
- Short notice: for an event this weekend, order early in the week. Rêve does not refund carrier delays.
- Changes: cancel 7 or more days before the start date for a full refund. Within 7 days, the amount becomes credit toward a future rental.
Full terms are in the Rental FAQs.
How the rental process works
At Rent with Rêve, you browse a curated selection of occasion wear, reserve a piece for your event dates, wear it, and send it back. Cleaning, a prepaid return label and insurance in transit are included.
The steps, from browsing to return
- Browse by occasion. Start from an occasion, such as wedding guest, black tie and evening, or bridal, or from an edit. Filter by size, designer, category, season, color and price.
- Check the fit. Each listing shows the designer and the size the piece was bought in. Each piece exists in one size, and sizing varies by designer, so read the fit notes.
- Choose a length and start date. Pick 4, 7 or 14 days on the piece's page, with a start date a few days before the event.
- Pay to hold your dates. The reservation is confirmed as soon as the order is paid.
- Receive and try it on. Orders ship within 2–3 business days. Try the piece on the day it arrives and report any fit issue within 24 hours.
- Wear it. Normal wear and tear is covered.
- Send it back. Drop it with the carrier by noon on the return date, using the prepaid label. Do not clean it first. Late returns cost $15 per day for each piece.
- Rêve cleans it. Specialist partners clean every piece professionally before the next rental.

Comparing rental fees and designer selection
| Platform | Model | What you pay | Selection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rent with Rêve | Single-occasion rental from curator closets, plus pre-loved resale | A price per piece for 4, 7 or 14 days, with no membership; wedding guest pieces a median $85 for four days | More than 700 pieces to rent, from over 250 labels |
| Rent the Runway | Monthly subscription, plus one-time Reserve rentals | $129, $164 or $275 a month for 1, 2 or 4 shipments of 5 items; Reserve rentals of 4 or 8 days | 750+ designer brands |
| Nuuly | Monthly subscription | $98 a month for 6 items | Hundreds of brands |
A subscription suits someone who rents every month, including for everyday wear. Per-piece rental suits someone who rents for specific events. Rent the Runway added a shipping charge to subscription plans in June 2026.
Renting compared with buying
Buying a designer gown means paying the full retail price, then storing and cleaning it. Renting means paying for the days you need the piece, with cleaning included and nothing to store. If you decide to keep a Rêve piece during the rental, you can buy it at its buyout price, minus what you have already paid. Rêve also sells pre-loved pieces to own.
The Designer Rental & Resale Guide compares more platforms, including Armoire, By Rotation and pre-loved resale sites, and explains when buying pre-loved costs less than renting.
Sustainability in fashion rental
Renting designer occasion wear through platforms like Rent with Rêve supports a circular fashion economy. One garment serves many events and many wearers, instead of one purchase for one night.
Why occasion wear suits rental
Occasion pieces are often bought for a single wear. In a ThredUp survey, 87% of wedding guests said they had bought at least one outfit they wore only once (Associated Press, 2026). Sustainability writer Aja Barber told the AP that for someone who occasionally needs occasion wear and does not want a dress worn just once, renting “can be really impactful.”
Extending the life of designer pieces
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation estimates that one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or incinerated every second. Between 2000 and 2015, clothing sales more than doubled while the number of times each item was worn fell (Waste Dive, 2017).
Rental and resale work against both trends by keeping a well-made garment in use for longer. Many Rêve pieces come from curators' own closets, so the platform puts existing garments back into use. Some pieces can be rented or bought, and pre-loved pieces stay in use with a new owner.
Shared wardrobes, and what the benefit depends on
When many people wear the same piece, the resources used to make it are spread across every wear. Kate Fletcher, a professor of sustainability and fashion at Manchester Metropolitan University, described this to the AP as the garment's embodied resources being “worked harder.” Drivepoint's analysis of Rent the Runway, based largely on its S-1, puts the average at about 20 rentals per piece (Drivepoint).
The benefit depends on logistics. A 2021 LUT University study of a pair of jeans found that renting had the highest climate impact of five scenarios, mainly because of transport to and from the rental service (World Economic Forum). Rental has the clearest advantage when it replaces a purchase you would wear once, which is the usual case for a gown or a wedding guest dress.
