The Rêve Guide

How to Choose a Designer Fashion Rental Platform

Well-known designer rental platforms in the US include Rent the Runway, Nuuly, Armoire and By Rotation. Each works differently: some charge a monthly subscription, some rent single pieces, and some connect renters with individual lenders.

Last reviewed . Prices are taken from each platform's public pages.

The right choice for a special event depends on four things: the model, the depth of occasion wear, availability on your dates, and how the platform handles fit and cleaning.

Rent with Rêve is a curated rental and resale platform that specializes in occasion wear. It rents designer pieces for 4, 7 or 14 days, with no membership, and many of the same pieces can be bought pre-loved. This guide covers how to compare platforms and how the rental process works, from choosing a size to sending the piece back.

Selecting the right platform for special events

Choose a rental platform by matching its model and selection to the event. A subscription suits frequent, everyday renting. A single-occasion rental suits a wedding, a gala or a trip. Rent with Rêve combines designer rental with pre-loved resale, so the same platform covers a one-time event and a piece you decide to keep.

How the main platforms compare

Prices are from each platform's public pages and help centers, reviewed October 20, 2026. Subscription prices do not include introductory offers, tax or shipping charges where they apply.
Platform Model What you pay Rental length
Rent with Rêve Curated rental from curator closets, plus pre-loved resale A price per piece, no membership; wedding guest pieces a median $85 for four days 4, 7 or 14 days
Rent the Runway Monthly subscription, plus one-time Reserve rentals $129, $164 or $275 a month for 1, 2 or 4 shipments of 5 items Monthly; Reserve rentals of 4 or 8 days
Nuuly Monthly subscription $98 a month for 6 items One month
Armoire Monthly membership From $89 a month Monthly, with unlimited swaps on some plans
By Rotation Lenders list pieces from their own closets Set by each lender Usually a minimum of 3 days

Depth of selection for your occasion

A large catalog does not guarantee depth in formal wear. Check how many pieces a platform carries for your dress code and your dates, not its total count. On Rent with Rêve in October 2026, the rental selection included:

  • Black tie and evening: 73 pieces, with 40 gowns across the full rental catalog.
  • Wedding guest: 239 pieces.
  • Vacation and resort: more than 300 pieces, suited to a honeymoon or a week-long beach trip on a 7- or 14-day rental.

Edits such as The Black Tie Edit, The Wedding Guest Edit and The Resort Edit narrow the selection to a single dress code.

Seasonal availability

Demand concentrates around peak event dates. One renter planning for early October wrote that it is “prime fall wedding season” and that sizes for that weekend were “starting to dwindle” (r/capsulewardrobe).

On platforms that stock one piece per style, early booking matters more. Each Rêve piece is one of one, and your dates are held as soon as the order is paid. The shop's Season filter shows pieces suited to the time of year. In October 2026, 327 rental pieces were marked for fall, including 96 for weddings, 56 for black tie and 24 gowns.

Platforms that rent and sell

Some renters want an occasion piece they can wear again. A platform that both rents and sells lets you try a piece at an event, then keep it. On Rent with Rêve, 422 of the 706 rental pieces can also be bought, and more than 800 pieces are for sale in total. If you decide to keep a piece during the rental, you pay its buyout price minus what you have already paid.

Understanding the rental process and logistics

Renting a designer dress online follows the same sequence on most platforms: choose a piece and dates, check the fit, wear it, and send it back for cleaning. Rent with Rêve sets out the fit, care and return rules for each step, and cleaning is included in every rental.

How renting a designer dress online works

  1. Choose the piece. Browse by occasion or edit, then filter by size, designer, season and color.
  2. Read the fit notes. Listings give the size and fit notes, and most link to the designer's size guide.
  3. Pick your dates. Choose 4, 7 or 14 days and a start date a few days before the event. The rental starts on the day the piece arrives.
  4. Check out. Your dates are held as soon as the order is paid.
  5. Receive it. Orders ship within 2–3 business days, with tracking by email, to all 50 US states.
  6. Try it on the day it arrives. Report a fit issue within 24 hours.
  7. Return it. Drop it with the carrier by noon on the return date, using the prepaid label in the box. Do not clean it first.

Getting the size right

Fit is a frequent concern for people new to renting (r/femalefashionadvice). Platforms that stock several sizes of each style can send a backup size. Platforms built on individual closets usually carry one size per piece, so the listing details matter more.

At Rêve, each piece exists in the size its curator wears. To reduce fit issues:

  • Use the listing's fit section. 691 of the 706 rental listings have a “Fit & sizing” section, and most link to the designer's own size guide.
  • Compare by designer, not by your usual size. Sizing varies between designers, and many listings note whether a piece runs small or true to size.
  • Leave time before the event. A swap depends on another piece being free and on time before the event.
  • Know the fit policy. Report within 24 hours of delivery and return the piece the same day with its tag. Rêve swaps it at no extra charge if another piece is available. Otherwise you can take the full rental price as credit, or a refund minus shipping and cleaning.

Details are on the Fit & Sizing page.

Cleaning and care

Cleaning methods vary by fabric. Nuuly, for example, test-washes new items, assigns each one of more than a dozen wash types, and uses wet washing, dry cleaning or special handling. Items that need a repair or stain removal go to a repair team and are inspected again before they return to stock. In 2024, Nuuly removed 1.2 million stains (Retail Brew).

At Rent with Rêve:

  • Every piece is authenticated and inspected before it is listed.
  • Specialist partners clean every piece professionally after each rental, and the cost is included.
  • You return the piece as it is, without cleaning it yourself.
  • Minor wear and tear is covered. Any repair fee for significant damage is capped at the piece's depreciated value.
  • Every rental is insured while in transit.
